Phoenix Earth Food CO-OP Board Meeting Minutes
January 12,1993

Meeting opened 7:45.  Present were Dave Engel, Kyle Grefe, Dini Schut, Sandy Craig, John Jascob, Hal Hamer, Madelyn Gratop, Managers Gary Ohler, Helen Elden and guests David Bohon and Lana Voyles.

New Business: Minutes of 12/14/92 meeting were accepted as corrected for spelling errors.

Manager's Report: A detailed report to be included with these minutes shows that we made a profit in December of $1400.  Gary showed a neglected letter from FORC, requesting legal permission to come and remove stock from the store in case of our failure, in an effort to cut their losses.  Sandy will see to the letter.  Gary and Hal have worked on spreadsheets for more detailed reporting than currently available.  We applied for and received a $500 grant from the Mifflin Co-op in Madison, WI. for cooking classes.  Gary will be transferring to a local Meijer's store and will have more time to work here.  We need to display our bad check policy and enforce it.

Today's sales were $480.  Helen expects the Homeopathy classes for the next 5 Saturdays will generate new customers and business, as will upcoming tasting and cooking classes.  Can we teach classes to school kids about nutrition? Helen will check into a grant for that.  Sandy questioned the time requirements of this project for Helen and Kyle volunteered to contact the dietician at Sylvania public schools.  Helen will try to schedule as many public events as possible, responding to customer interest.  Insects are pretty well under control.  Occasionally, we get bugs in stock received.  It may be time for another pest treatment.  We would like to supply Matthews restaurant with our Mescaline, and the relationship may work out.  Inventory taken, but not fully entered into computer.  Sandy & Jon are hosting the frequent flyer, approx. 400 members.  Dave offered to join their contributions.  We need to send a letter re: dues renewal, which started much discussion about timing, legality, etc.  Sandy will consult proper sources and have info by general membership meeting.

Membership: 409 members.  Dini and Becky Fitzpatrick will chair the annual membership meeting.  Sandy proposed a few speakers.  Hal will arrange the date with the Seventh Day Advent church on Sylvania Avenue, as last year.  The meeting will be held on March 23, 1993.  Kyle will work with Kristie on nominations for board vacancies.  As Dini has travel plans and Hal's schedule will be too full, they both anticipate resigning, at least temporarily.  Hal mentioned redundancies in the bylaws and Sandy appointed him to clean them up for voting at the annual meeting.  Next flyer will announce Annual meeting and call for nominations.

More New Business: Sandy discussed ways to raise $ for freezer, including a bridge loan.  Roger Greive said we needed to hold a few focus groups to improve our awareness of what the public wants.  He volunteered to run the group meetings and present results to the board.  We can promote the group meetings at the membership meeting.  We discussed a few outreach programs and adjourned at 9:33.
